Stamp collection5/30/2023 ![]() In fact, philately thrived because of how cheap it is to start, as recipients of posts will essentially get stamps for their collection for free. Regular stamp-collectors may also obtain Penny Blacks because millions were distributed at the time they were still used, making them cheaper and more easy to obtain than old editions of other forms of stamps. ![]() Investors inevitably end up collecting Penny Blacks, as it is hard to resist the fact that Penny Blacks hold that status of being one of the first stamps in the world. Stamp collectors soon became divided into two groups: investors, who are more serious about philately, and regular stamp collectors. Internalisation of postage stamps allowed stamp designs to diversify, in order for different countries to include their national and cultural symbols.ĭiversification in stamp designs increased the types of stamps that could be collected, making philately more exciting for collectors. This then led to perforated stamps, which were quicker to separate. However, as other countries started adopting this postage stamp system to send posts, the potential to send posts internationally opened up in the form of The Universal Postal Union (UPU) in the 1870s. Initially only distributed in Britain, the Penny Black was separated from other Penny Blacks using a scissor. England’s icon, the young Queen Victoria, was printed on the Penny Black. The next notable form of postage stamps was the Penny Black, the first adhesive stamps, also invented in Britain. Before this, prices were distance-based, involving a record-keeper who did the cumbersome work of keeping track of the distance and payment for every single post. The Uniform Penny Post is considered to be the first postage stamps as it was the first time a weight-based price system was used for all national posts. Stamps were first invented in 1840s Britain, the originals being the Uniform Penny Posts, with the first stamp collector being a British zoologist named John Edward Gray. Philately started in Britain where postage stamps were first produced, and subsequently spread across the globe as stamps were adopted by other countries. With 50 million collectors, stamp-collecting or ‘philately’ is one of the most popular hobbies in the world.

Cardinal directions5/30/2023 He added that when directions were required, they were most likely handled through the use of referents, such as landmarks and other geographic land features. Thus, he concluded that universal directions were less necessary for survival in these ancient cultures. Brown and others believe that ancient small-scale societies (nomads excluded) were not particularly mobile. He noted that cardinal points are particularly useful for cultures that are highly mobile and need finely tuned information to navigate complex spaces and geographies. Additionally, Brown mentioned that is was not particularly surprising to conclude that ancient languages of the remote past lacked terms for cardinal points. Furthermore, Brown explained that distributions of genetically similar cultures and languages revealed that the use of cardinal directions are believed to be quite new relative to the dates assigned to these cultures. In doing so, he concluded that there was little evidence to support the idea that our commonly used cardinal directions and their lexical derivatives were used in these ancient languages. Brown would say, bad assumption! Brown and others have studied many ancient languages such as Indo-European, Polynesian, Mayan, Uto-Aztecan, and Finno-Ugric languages and their studies tell a different story about the evolution of the universal words for cardinal directions.īrown compiled data from 127 globally distributed languages to look for evidence of cross-language references and uniformities in the lexical encoding and naming of the four directions. However, what about the Pre-European cultural use of directions? One would think that ancient cultures assigned words to cardinal points as a common means for navigation. Borealis (or septentrionalis) was replaced with north, australis (or meridionalis) with south, occidentalis with west and orientalis with east. ![]() History documents that during the migration period, the Germanic language names for cardinal directions entered the Romance languages, where they replaced the Latin names for their precedents. Primarily, I cannot help but wonder how cardinal directions developed as universal terms for direction the world over? ![]() If you are like me, you probably have a lot of questions that surround their etymology (the study of the origin of these words). As you are aware, these commonly accepted directions serve as the basis for map orientation, the compass, and other key navigational aids the world over. Cardinal directions are also referred to as cardinal points and they are defined as the universal directions of north, south, east and west. Thus, the cardinal directions remain essential elements of modern navigation. The word cardinal is synonymous with pivotal, main, and essential. In case you are wondering, cardinal directions have no history or affiliation with either the Catholic Church or the red breasted songbird.

Fuyajo sleepless town5/30/2023 ![]() Coproductions, though, can come with their own problems, central among them a set of mixed or conflicting agendas. Given the recent phenomenal flow of pop culture products between Japan and Hong Kong, in both directions, it's not surprising that prominent HK filmmakers like Lee Chi-ngai find themselves working on Japanese-financed films like Sleepless Town (others include The Christ of Nanjing (1996), Kitchen (1997), and Moonlight Express (1998)). The Hong Kong film industry, mired in financial crisis for several years now, has looked to several alternative strategies for survival: idiosyncratic, ultra-low budget films that are quick to produce, and less risky if they lose money ( Made in Hong Kong (1997), 9413 (1998), Love Will Tear Us Apart (1999), The Accident (1999)) massive high-concept and high-budget spectaculars that aim to fill the SAR's theaters again ( Stormriders (1998), and A Man Called Hero (1999)) and coproductions, with the mainland, European investors, or East Asian partners who still have money to spend. Don't take my words for it, take a look at the trailer yourself. ![]() The look and feel of this film is top notched, which won it the 2 HK Film Awards in Best Cinematography and Art Direction. And if you expect more romance in this film because of KT, while more action in the other film because of JC, you're absolutely correct. While KT is well known in Asia, JC has achieved international profile. This film is less well known than Shinjuku Incident because of Jackie Chan's high status. This is a forerunner of Shinjuku Incident (2009) where both films are set in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and both are in the gangster genre, and main characters are Chinese (from various parts of PRC) settling in the area. Similarly, Michael Wong speaks Cantonese with a New Yorker accent, which lends distinctness and colour to his voice. Both of these examples are found in Chungking Express (1994). Also, another Taiwanese actress like Brigitte Lin would in fact speak Mandarin in many Cantonese films. For example, we found out that KT speaks Cantonese with a heavy Mandarin accent. After the 1990s, everyone are given their own voice, even if they have an accent. For example, Chow Yun-Fat, who speaks perfect Cantonese - and in fact can deliver lines in English as well - was dubbed in most of his films by another Cantonese speakers (who usually didn't sound as good as Chow). No, it has nothing to do with the actor's language problem. Absurd, isn't it?īefore that, everyone's voice was dubbed. This was in fact an industry standard practise. ![]() For foreign audience of HK films, they would say, why shouldn't this be the case anyway. There's an interesting development occurred after 1990s in the HK film industry that I liked where they eventually used the actors' original voice in the movies. I suspect he probably didn't even need to audition for the part. Very few people who can watch this movie without subtitle, except for Kaneshiro Takashi, who can understand all the dialogues speaking in its native tongues. Thanks to his mixed heritage of Chinese and Japanese (inherited a Japanese nose, and Chinese eyes), and the different places he lived and worked, he's able to speak Japanese, Mandarin, Hokkien, and Cantonese, which are all spoken in this film.Īlthough he wasn't required to speak Cantonese and Hokkien, one could still say KT is tailored for this role. |
